In his Dartmouth commencement address, Roger Federer asked the graduates to guess something. He played 1,526 singles matches and won almost 80% of them. What share of the individual points did he win?
Only 54%. One of the most dominant players in the history of the sport lost nearly every second point he ever played.
When you lose every second point on average, you cannot afford to dwell on any of them. So Federer trained a phrase into himself.

Moving on is not softness or low standards. Federer called the mindset crucial precisely because of what it buys you: it frees you to fully commit to the next point, and the one after that, with intensity, clarity and focus.

Federer says he lost it at the very first point. He looked across the net at a man who had crushed him weeks earlier in Paris and thought: this guy is hungrier than I am, and he's finally got my number. By the time he remembered he was the five-time defending champion on grass, it was the third set. Too late.
When you are down, Federer said, it is natural to doubt yourself and to feel sorry for yourself. What you forget in that moment is that the person on the other side of the net is doing exactly the same thing.
Don't ever forget that, he told the graduates. The confidence you are comparing yourself to is mostly a costume.

The recovery Federer described is not denial. You accept the loss, cry it out if you need to, then force a smile and move on. Be relentless, adapt, grow, work harder and work smarter.
Whatever game you play in life, sometimes you lose: a point, a match, a season, a job. The champions are not the ones who never lose. They are the ones who have learned what to do the minute after.
